Mary Alice Dunn Kennedy "Mary Al" 80, of Louisville, passed away September 30, 2013 at Jewish Hospital. Mary Alice was born in Lexington, KY on August 22 1933 to the late Dorothy and Al Dunn. Mary Alice was a lifelong Baptist having been baptized at Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville and as a child having recited from memory the 23rd Psalm to the church congregation. Tragedy struck early in her young life as her mother and grandmother were killed in a fire at their boarding house. Mary Alice received the Carnegie Heroism Medal for her actions the night of the fire when she alerted sleeping boarders saving several lives. After the fire she went to live at the Kentucky Female Orphans Home in Midway, KY where she completed high school by age 15 and also completed studies for an Associates degree. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of Kentucky where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She attended graduate school at the University of Miami and at the University of Louisville where she received a Masters degree in Education.

Mary Alice was a beloved elementary school teacher for 37 years in Kentucky and Florida, and loved and nurtured children to reach their individual potentials academically, socially and emotionally. She was active in many education and charitable groups and was especially proud of her work with the American Red Cross for which she received a 20 year service award. She served as Vice President for recruitment for Phi Delta Kappa. She also served as editor of the University of Louisville Women's Club newsletter and was the past editor of the Waggener High School Athletic Program.

Mary Alice loved God, country, family, children and her many pets. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jim Kennedy, her son Ben, and brother George A. "Scooter" Dunn (Janice), and nephew Logan Dunn.

Her graveside funeral service will be 12:00 noon Friday October 4th 2013 at
Pewee Valley Cemetery on Maple Ave.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 Thursday and Friday 10:30am to 11:30am at Ratterman Funeral Home 12900 Shelbyville Rd. East Louisville, KY.
